Date night needs a movie that works for both of you.
Not too long. Not too dark. Funny enough that you can both laugh. Romantic enough that someone reaches for someone's hand. Streaming, ideally, or worth renting.
Here are 15 that actually deliver. Mostly currently streaming, with notes on each one's vibe so you can pick based on the night.
May 2026.
01
Anyone but You (2023)
Stream on: Netflix.
Sydney Sweeney and Glen Powell. A meet-cute that sours, then a destination wedding in Australia, then the fake-dating-to-make-exes-jealous trope executed at the highest level. Will Gluck directing. Loosely adapted from Much Ado About Nothing.
Made $220 million worldwide on a $25 million budget. The rom-com that proved the genre still works theatrically. The Natasha Bedingfield "Unwritten" running gag is the kind of detail that makes a movie quotable forever.
For: people who want a guaranteed good time.
02
Past Lives (2023)
Stream on: Paramount+ (and rent on multiple platforms).
Celine Song's directorial debut. Greta Lee, Teo Yoo, John Magaro. Two childhood friends in Korea who grow up and apart, reconnect online, and finally meet again in adulthood with their respective lives already built around other people.
Nominated for Best Picture and Best Original Screenplay. The most quietly devastating romance of the 2020s. Don't watch this on a first date. Watch this on a fifth.
For: couples who want to feel something.

03
The Princess Bride (1987)
Stream on: Disney+, Hulu.
Rob Reiner's fairy-tale adventure with William Goldman's screenplay. Cary Elwes, Robin Wright, Mandy Patinkin, Wallace Shawn, André the Giant. As you wish. Inconceivable. Anybody want a peanut.
Endlessly quotable. Romantic without being saccharine. Funny without being mean. The rare movie that's perfect for both people whether or not they've seen it before.
For: literally any date.
04
La La Land (2016)
Stream on: Hulu.
Damien Chazelle. Emma Stone and Ryan Gosling singing and dancing through Los Angeles. Six Oscar wins (initially seven, including the one that wasn't actually theirs). Justin Hurwitz's score is the best in any musical of the past decade.
The ending is the conversation. Bring tissues. Argue about it afterward.
For: couples who want to talk about a movie.
05
About Time (2013)
Stream on: Netflix (US), Peacock.
Richard Curtis. Domhnall Gleeson as a young man who learns he can time-travel within his own life. Rachel McAdams as the woman he falls for. Bill Nighy as his father (the film's secret weapon). The actual subject is fatherhood and the ordinary moments we miss the first time through.
Marketed as a rom-com. Actually a quiet meditation on aging. One of the most surprising movies on this list.
For: couples who appreciate being snuck up on by emotion.

06
Crazy Rich Asians (2018)
Stream on: Netflix.
Jon M. Chu directing Kevin Kwan's novel. Constance Wu, Henry Golding, Awkwafina, Michelle Yeoh. A Singaporean wedding, a meet-the-family crisis, and the most lavishly photographed romance movie of the 2010s.
The first major Hollywood studio film with an all-Asian cast since 1993. Generated cultural conversation that lasted for years. Sequels in development.
For: glamorous nights in.
07
Knives out (2019)
Stream on: Amazon Prime, Apple TV+.
Rian Johnson. Daniel Craig as Benoit Blanc. Ana de Armas, Chris Evans, Jamie Lee Curtis, Toni Collette. A whodunit framed as a comedy of manners.
Not technically a romance, but the kind of movie that gives a couple something to discuss for hours afterward. The "you can never trust an actor" energy. The donut hole metaphor. The Hamilton soundtrack reveal.
For: couples who like puzzles.
08
The Big Sick (2017)
Stream on: Amazon Prime.
Kumail Nanjiani and Emily V. Gordon wrote it about their own real-life relationship. Holly Hunter and Ray Romano as the parents. A romance that opens with the actual romance happening, then pivots to medically-induced coma as the relationship gets tested.
One of the best date-night movies of the 2010s. Holly Hunter is the MVP.
For: couples who like meeting the parents.
09
To All the Boys I've Loved Before (2018)
Stream on: Netflix.
Susan Johnson directing Jenny Han's YA novel. Lana Condor as Lara Jean. Noah Centineo as Peter. The fake-dating-and-then-real-dating arc executed for a younger demographic.
The first of a trilogy that ended in 2021. The first one is still the best one. The post-it notes. The contract. The car-doors-closing scene at the lacrosse field.
For: cozy nights.
10
Materialists (2025)
Stream on: Rent or buy (Apple TV, Amazon).
Celine Song's follow-up to Past Lives. Dakota Johnson as a New York matchmaker. Pedro Pascal as the wealthy client. Chris Evans as her ex. A romance for adults that takes class and money seriously.
The dialogue is some of the sharpest in any 2025 movie. The chemistry is the focal point. The ending earned its conversations.
For: couples who have been together long enough to be honest.
11
Set It up (2018)
Stream on: Netflix.
Claire Scanlon. Zoey Deutch and Glen Powell (his first major rom-com lead) as assistants who try to set up their respective boss-from-hell employers (Lucy Liu and Taye Diggs) to give themselves more free time. The setup-to-real-feelings turn is executed well.
The Netflix rom-com that proved the streaming-original rom-com could actually work. Underrated.
For: couples who like watching ambitious people fail at hiding their feelings.
12
When Harry Met Sally... (1989)
Stream on: Apple TV+, rent on multiple platforms.
Rob Reiner. Nora Ephron screenplay. Billy Crystal and Meg Ryan as friends who maybe should be more than friends. The deli scene. The split-screen call. The "I'll have what she's having." The New Year's Eve ending.
The most quoted rom-com in American film history. The "can men and women be friends" question that the movie poses and then carefully refuses to fully answer.
For: people who haven't seen a rom-com in a while and need to remember why they're great.
13
Hit Man (2024)
Stream on: Netflix.
Richard Linklater. Glen Powell co-wrote and stars. Adria Arjona as the woman who hires him (thinking he's a real hitman). A philosophical comedy that turns into a serious romance that turns into a thriller. Based on a true story (loosely).
The Linklater talky-dialogue rhythm. The Powell range showcase. The Arjona breakout. A genuinely surprising movie that doesn't get filed as a date night film as often as it should be.
For: couples who like clever.
14
Notting Hill (1999)
Stream on: Netflix.
Richard Curtis again. Hugh Grant as the bookshop owner. Julia Roberts as the movie star. The fundamental fantasy of an ordinary life intersecting with a famous one, played for both comedy and genuine emotion.
The "I'm just a girl, standing in front of a boy" speech that gets quoted endlessly. The blue-door house. The bench at the end.
For: nostalgic Sunday-night watching.
15
Bridgerton (Series, 2020-)
Stream on: Netflix.
This is a TV show, not a movie, but it's the most popular date-night-adjacent content streaming in 2026. Period romance. Costumes. Scandal. Steamy scenes that became cultural events. Season 4 is premiering imminently as of this writing.
For couples who'd rather have date weeks instead of date nights. Season 1 is the entry point. The Anthony and Kate season (Season 2) is many fans' favorite.
